What does the food we eat say about ourselves? What does it say about class, migration, memory, longing, and adaptation?
For my upcoming thesis project, I want to explore Iranian identity, belonging, and origin through Persian food culture in a diaspora context.
In many Western media, Iran and Persian culture are often reduced to politics, conflicts, or what is foreign and distant. Food is one of the most powerful ways to re-humanize a culture and bring people together. I have asked family members if they can mention specific products they usually buy, why they buy them, and what significance the product has for them. The result was a selection of different products that I have tried to find in various grocery stores in Stockholm and Gothenburg.
Along with this, I have also digitally printed a cloth inspired by Persian patterns and symbols.
Time it took to complete this project was three weeks.
